AfriCHAN Launches New Regional Program to Combat Child Malnutrition in Eastern Uganda

Bukedi Subregion, Uganda — The African Centre for Health and Nutrition (AfriCHAN) has launched a new regional program aimed at reducing child malnutrition and improving maternal health outcomes across Eastern Uganda. The initiative, titled “Strengthening Community-Based Nutrition Systems,” will support health workers, local leaders, and community volunteers with skills, tools, and evidence-based strategies to enhance service delivery.

The program was launched following recent research conducted by AfriCHAN, which revealed rising cases of undernutrition among children under five in several districts. Key components of the program include: Community nutrition screenings and referrals Training for health workers and Village Health Teams (VHTs) Distribution of educational materials Household nutrition counselling Strengthening data collection and reporting tools

Speaking at the launch, AfriCHAN leadership emphasized:

Every child deserves a strong start in life. This program brings communities, leaders, and health professionals together to ensure children receive the nutrition and care they need.” Local leaders praised AfriCHAN’s evidence-driven approach and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the initiative. The program is expected to benefit over 25,000 children and mothers within its first year, with plans to scale across the region.
